A primary focus at Author In Me since its inception is to empower children by transforming their ideas into picture books. Over time, our vision has expanded to include a flagship mentorship program for young aspiring writers aged 8-15, led by accomplished children's authors. As we delved into the stories created during these sessions, a profound realisation emerged – each idea germinating in a child's mind served as a unique window into their perspective on the world.
The characters they brought to life in their narratives embodied these young minds' strengths and vulnerabilities. The challenges depicted in their stories often revealed suppressed fears or thoughts stemming from limited beliefs shaped by experiences of prejudice based on factors like colour, race, or culture. Sometimes, the challenges portrayed delved into subconscious fears and emotional complexities arising from everyday relationship dynamics and the overwhelming influx of information.
Recognising the profound impact of children reading stories crafted by their peers, we observed a heightened connection to the plots and resonance with the essence of the narratives. When children read stories written by their peers, it transformed reading from a mere activity into a deeply engaging and enjoyable exercise.
The challenges presented in the books and the uncomplicated solutions resonated deeply with children, making the stories effective conversation starters on intricate subjects such as friendship, climate change, grief, positive values, tolerance, self-belief, fears, illness, bullying, and more. Inspired by this insight, we launched our imprint 'Young Voices’ in 2019.
Children's stories, we discovered, are not mere reflections of their external environment but potent tools for expressing their inner worlds. What struck us as particularly remarkable in every child's tale was their innate ability to devise simple solutions for complex problems – a facet often overlooked when adults write for children.
Embarking on the journey to publish novellas authored by children,we recognised that we were navigating uncharted territory within theexpansive publishing realm. This venture into a niche market reflectsour belief in the evolving dynamics of society, foreseeing youngauthors becoming an integral and influential force in the publishingindustry. The younger generation, armed with a heightened awareness of societal issues, aspires to be change makers. Acknowledging the significance of their perspectives, we endeavourto publish books that empower them to articulate their thoughts andideas through compelling stories. We are a small independent publisher with limited resourcesand a large vision to foster inclusivity and diversity in thepublishing market by actively working to establish partnershipswith bookshops.
Through these alliances, we aim to create a dedicated space, StoryGarden, that showcases and sells books authored by young writers along with books by diverse authors, thereby contributing to a more representative and varied literary landscape.
The enduring success and influence of the Young Voices imprint will be evident in children's increased interest in reading and writing. Encountering a book authored by a young child serves as a source of inspiration, offering children a tangible role model and nurturing the seeds of imagination within them. In an era dominated by artificial intelligence across various fields, encouraging children to explore their inner realms of creativity and hone their innate storytelling abilities can positively impact their overall well-being and allow them to emerge as creative and responsible future leaders. The ripple effects of this impact extend to heightened levels of empathy, tolerance, acceptance of diversity, and an increased sense of confidence and empowered expression in children. Reading books written by youngauthors not only provides reassurance to children that theyare not alone in their challenges but also reinforces the beliefthat every problem has a simple solution.
